I am wondering about the direction of the nails: Why did you put the nails for the lid from the underside to the top? Is that "the traditional way"? To me it might look "right", if the nails heads appear on top of the lid.
Good question rene. It's not one I had asked myself! This was the way it was done most of the time in the 17th century. There is also a practical side to it; the cleat is more likely to split if trying to clinch (bend over) the nail onto the cleat instead of onto the top of the box.
