Variations on a theme. Sea monster chalice in field maple.
And the sea monster shoal together.
So here's the plank and muntin screen with surroundings almost finished.
Board and ledge doors with clinched rosehead nails, installed.
And a reminder of the new windowsills.
This cottage has had a lot of tlc; removing modern materials and re-instating more appropriate traditional materials. Oak, lime mortar, stone flags. It has been a pleasure to be a part of that care. My work here is done.
After staring at the sea monster 'salt' for a while, it seemed only logical, to move it through 90 degrees and make a chalice.
It could just as easily be a 'salt' or 'pig', for use next to the cooker/stove, in the kitchen.
No complicated joints here. There is beauty in the simplest joinery.
Board and ledge doors. Rebated boards. Clinched rosehead nails. Nothing original. It works. Drill a hole through the board and ledge. Hammer nail through (not nailing door to trestles). Bend over end of nail.
Hammer flat (which pulls the boards and ledge together, or 'clinches' them). Let no man (or gravity!), pull asunder.
That nails it.
And for contrast the most ornate cherry spoon.
I've never made a salt before. We use salt loose, so it's about time I made something attractive for the salt to live in.
So, sea monster salt in cherry, with a praying Jonah salt spoon in black walnut.
I'm not putting my fingers in there, but Jonah......it's his job apparently.
Another church boss-inspired spoon.
Cherry.
A bit stuck on this form. And spoons in general. But then it has been the holidays.
Back to oak board and ledge doors tomorrow.
With a new friend in cherry. And an old friend in black walnut.
